Whiplash Treatments

Medications only provide temporary relief

Whiplash treatments can include a variety of medications and techniques. It's important to obtain an accurate diagnosis from a qualified back and neck specialist to determine the extent of injury sustained before beginning treatment. Most of the time, however, whiplash will respond to treatment that can be carried out at home under the direction of a physician or licensed physical therapist.

Traction, exercises, pain-relieving medications, ice and heat, and ultrasound therapy (such as MendMeShop Therapeutic Ultrasound) are often the prescribed treatments. Initially, ice is applied about every two hours for up to 20 minutes for the first day. Gel packs are a better option than frozen peas if possible, as they mold to your neck/back and are reusable. You can also put the gel packs in a washable, polar fleece wrap to secure3 the packs to your body (very effective when the pain is in a hard to reach or multiple areas) and to create a barrier between your skin and the pack to prevent heat/ice burn. After the first 24 hours, heat may be used to help relax the muscles in the neck and shoulders. A soft collar is often prescribed to give support during the initial phase of recovery, which typically lasts two to three weeks.

To prevent chronic symptoms that can lead to increased damage, many doctors and chiropractors recommend the use of ultrasound therapy. The sound waves are effective in relieving inflammation and reducing muscle spasms, thereby reducing the pressure on delicate nerve endings. The deep vibration of the sound waves on the muscle creates heat and increases blood flow to the tissue. This method of whiplash treatment is now available for home use.
